Question

How does the number of turns affect inductance?

Open in App
Solution

Number of Wire Turns in the Coil:

  1. The inductance increases with the number of wires turning in the coil. Less inductance is produced by a coil with fewer wire turns. For a given quantity of coil current, more wire coils suggest a stronger magnetic field force.
  2. When an electric current passes through an inductor, it is utilized to store energy in a magnetic field. Wires coiled around a core make up an inductor.
  3. A greater number of coil turns will result in a higher inductance, all other things being equal. When the coil's turns are reduced, the inductance also decreases.
  4. Inductance increases with increasing wire turns in the coil and decreases with decreasing wire turns in the coil, all other things being equal.
  5. The following formula can be used to find an approximation of inductance for any coil of wire:

L=N2μAlμ=μrμ0

Where, L stand for Inductance of the coil in Henrys, N for Number of turns in a wire coil, μ for Permeability of core material, μr for Relative permeability dimensionless, μ0 for 1.26×10-6T-m/At permeability of free space, A for Area of the coil in square meters=πr2, and l for Average length of the coil in meters.
