Question

How does PH scale work in our digestive system??

Open in App
Solution

Each point: 1 Mark

1. As we know our stomach produces gastric juice which contains large amount of hydrochloric acid (pH about 1.4).
2. The acid does not harm the stomach wall because of the protective mucus layer, but kills germs and bacteria which enter in our digestive system along with food, thus in a way it protects us from diseases and helps in digestion.
3. Stomach acid stimulates the inactive enzymes secreted in stomach which helps in chemical digestion of food.
4. Sometimes excess of acid is produced in the stomach due to overeating, eating spicy foods or due to irregular food habits. This stage is called acidity which causes gastritis.
5. To get relief from this pain, one must take antacids. These contain bases to neutralise the excess acids. Examples- Magnesium hydroxide (milk of magnesia). Mg(OH)2 or Aluminium hydroxide.
