Question

How does photosynthesis work simply?

Open in App
Solution

Photosynthesis:

  1. Photosynthesis is the process by which plants use sunlight, carbon dioxide (CO2), and water to generate oxygen and energy in the form of sugars.
  2. Light energy transfers electrons from water (H2O) taken up by plant roots to CO2 to make carbohydrates during oxygenic photosynthesis.
  3. The CO2 is "reduced," or gains electrons, while the water is "oxidized," or loses electrons, in this process.
  4. Carbohydrates and oxygen are both created.
  5. Using light energy, six molecules of carbon dioxide combine with 12 molecules of water.
  6. The end outcome is a single carbohydrate molecule glucose, as well as six oxygen and water molecules each.
  7. Plants use minute openings on their leaves called stomata to take CO2 from the air and release water and oxygen.
  8. Stomata let in CO2 as they open, but they also release oxygen and allow water vapour to leave.
