Question

How does polymerization stop?

Open in App
Solution

Polymers: These are macromolecules, which are synthesized by the multiplication of monomer units. Example- When ethene is the monomer unit, The multiplication of ethene monomer forms polyethene polymer.

To stop polymerization:

  • There are various types of polymerization reactions, every reaction has particular conditions under which reaction takes place.
  • In free radical polymerization, conditions are favourable for carrying out the reactions. So, to stop such type of reactions inhibitors are used.
  • Using an inhibitor in the reaction is known as the termination step. Due to this further polymerization will be stopped.

Therefore, Polymerization is stopped by using inhibitors in the reaction.
