Question

How does pruning help in making the hedge dense?

Open in App
Solution

Pruning:

  1. Pruning is the process of removal of parts of plants, trees, or vines that are no longer visually aesthetic or injurious to the plant's growth.
  2. It helps enhance the plant shape and flowering of the plants. It helps new buds emerge.

Role of pruning in making the hedge dense:

  1. Pruning frees the axillary buds from apical dominance.
  2. The shoot apex contains a high concentration of auxin and thus it promotes apical bud growth while it suppresses the growth of axillary buds.
  3. Thus, when the shoot apex is trimmed during pruning, it helps the axillary buds to grow and the hedge becomes dense.
