Instructions:
- Define rain
- Explain the processes involved in the formation of rain
Solution:
Rain is liquid precipitation in the form of water droplets.
Processes involved:
- The Sun’s rays heat the water bodies. The water vapourises and rises with hot air, reaches high up in the sky, and gets cooled. The change of water into vapour is known as evaporation.
- With the cooling, water vapour is transformed into tiny water droplets. These droplets gather around minute dust or smoke particles in the air, gradually increasing in size and forming clouds. The process by which water vapour changes into water is called condensation.
- The clouds continue to rise upwards, it gets cooler, and more droplets are formed. As they get heavier, they become more difficult to remain in the air and cause rain. The falling of water from the sky in various forms is known as precipitation.
