Question

How does respiration take place in muscles? Give equation for the same

Open in App
Solution

Glucose and oxygen react together in muscle cells to produce carbon dioxide and water and release energy. Under aerobic conditions in the muscle carbon dioxide is produced with water producing energy that is required by the muscle to contract and relax.

Glucose + Oxygen → Carbon dioxide + Water

Under anaerobic conditions, where the oxygen in the muscle is depleted during exercise, the end product of respiration in the muscle cell is lactic acid instead of carbon dioxide. This only occurs due to deficiency of oxygen in the muscle cells.
