Question

How does sound travel as a transverse wave ?

Open in App
Solution

Sound can travel as both longitudinal and transverse in solid mediums.

It depends on the intermolecular forces between molecules of the medium. In air, these forces are low, so one particle has to to collide with another to actually get the disturbance to get transferred. In mediums like solids, which are more rigid, sound waves can transfer as transverse waves, but remember, there should be a way, to shake your ear drum, if you're to listen anything.

Hope this helps :)
