Question

How does the atmosphere act as a blanket?

Open in App
Solution

The atmosphere is made of several layers of gases and these gases wrap the earth. The gases present in atmosphere perform vital functions of protection and maintenance as follows:
1. Ozone absorbs harmful UV radiations coming from the sun.
2. Carbon-dioxide and water vapours trap the heat and regulate the temperature of the earth by keeping it ambient by absorbing heat rays during the day and by reflecting the heat trapped during daytime at night.
3. Air being a bad conductor of heat prevents a sudden increase of temperature during daytime and at the same time does not allow the heat to escape into outer space during the night.
Hence, atmosphere covers and protect the earth like a blanket.
