Solution

The atmosphere is considered as a blanket because it protects the earth and all the organisms here from the adverse effect of the conditions outside like UV radiations of the sun. It also keeps the average temperature of the earth constant during the day. It prevents the sudden increase in temperature during the daylight hours and also it slows down the escape of heat into outer space during the night.
The reason why the moon does not have an atmosphere despite being at the same distance from the sun as earth is primarily the small size of the moon. Secondly, the moon does not experience plate tectonics and geologic upwelling. So it's geologically dead.
