i) The Census of India organizes settlements in India using certain criteria. The census defines various types of settlements with different meanings. These are as follows:
1) Megacities:
i) Cities having more than 10 million people.
ii) In the world New York was the first city to attain the status of a mega city in 1950 with the 12.5 million.
iii) Example: Greater Mumbai (Population 18.4 million)
2) Metropolitan cities/Million plus cities:
i) Cities having the population between 1 million to 10 million.
ii) Example: Chennai(8.6million) , Hyderabad(7.8million), Ahmedabad(6.2million)
3)Cities: i) Urban cities having the population between 1lakh and 1million.
ii) Example: Guntur, Nellore, Tirupati.
4) Towns: i) All the urban towns having a population between 50000 to 1lakh.
ii) Example: Anantpur in Anantpur distric, Andhrapradesh, Avilala in Chittoor district.
5) Revenue/Census villages: i) A village with defined borders
ii) Example: Arogyavaram in Chittoor district.
6) Hamlets: i) A group of houses within revenue village.
ii) Example: Mudigubba in Dharmavaram revenue division, Andhrapradesh.
