Variations in a population of a species arise due to the crossing over in sexually reproductive organisms and the random mutations occurring during the replication of DNA. These variations provide the novel features to the organisms and provide the survival advantage over the other organisms. In the process of natural selection, the organisms with favorable variations continue to reproduce and become dominant species. Hence, the variations allow for the natural selection of the organisms.
