Question

How Does The EMF Change With Temperature?

Open in App
Solution

The effect of temperature on EMF of cell:

  1. The relationship between EMF and Temperature is given by Nernst Equation E=E0-RTzFlnQ.
  2. As we can see from the formula, the potential of the cell decreases as the temperature increases if the reaction quotient is not one as the value of temperature is negative in Nernst Equation.

Hence, The EMF decreases as temperature increases in the case when the reaction quotient is not one, in other cases EMF increases as temperature increases.
