Gravitational force $F = G m_{1} m_{2} / r^{2}$
So when they are at distance $r$ then force $F_{1} = G m_{1} m_{2} / r^{2}$
and when they are at distance $r / 2$ then force $F_{2} = G m_{1} m_{2} / (r / 2)^{2} = 4 G m_{1} m_{2} / r^{2} = 4 F_{1}$
So the gravitational force became $4$ times.
