Question

How does the heat produced in a wire or a conductor depend upon the current passing through the conductor?

Open in App
Solution

Heat produced in a conductor

  1. The expression for finding the heat produced in a wire of a conductor can be determined by using the expression:H=I2Rt

Where, H is the heat produced, I is the amount of current passing through the conductor, R is the resistance of the conductor, t is time period.

2. So, from the relationship H=I2Rt, we can conclude that, if R and t are constant, then, H=I2.

From above expression, we can conclude that HI2.

Hence, Heat produced in a wire is directly proportional to the square of the current (I2) flowing through the conductor.
