Question

HOW DOES THE HIGHER PERCENTAGE OF CARBON MONOXIDE AT A PLACE EFFECT A PERSON HEALTH IN THAT AREA?

Open in App
Solution

Haemoglobin has more affinity towards carbon monoxide than oxygen. It binds to haemoglobin about 240 times more tightly than oxygen, forming a compound called carboxyhaemoglobin. This reduces the amount of haemoglobin available to bind to oxygen, so the body and tissues become starved of oxygen that causes the in, causing the brain to swell, leading to unconsciousness and neurological damage.
