Question

How does the mass of a proton compare to the mass of:

an atom of Hydrogen

Open in App
Solution

  • Mass of an atom of Hydrogen (H) = 1.67 × 10-24 g
  • Mass of a proton = 1.67 × 10-24 g
  • Hence, mass of a proton is similar to the mass of a Hydrogen atom.
  • This can be understood by knowing that a Hydrogen atom contains a proton and an electron. There is no neutron in Hydrogen atom.
  • An electron has a negligible mass, so almost entire mass of the Hydrogen atom is because of the proton only.
