Question

How does the medium affect the amplitude of free vibrations of a body ?

Open in App
Solution

Free vibrations, which are defined as natural and unforced vibrations of a body, can take place in any medium. But, when a wave passes through a medium, some portion of it is absorbed. If the medium is highly absorbing type, the amplitude of the vibrations will be very low. Hence, the vibrations depend on various factors like changes in properties of the medium, changes in the temperature, changes in the properties of the vibrating medium.
