Question

How does the particle size vary in a true solution, a suspension and a colloid?

Open in App
Solution

Particle size in a true solution is the smallest and the particle size of suspensions is the largest.

  • True solution: It is a homogeneous mixture in which the particles are not visible to the naked eyes. Example: Salt solution etc.
  • Suspensions: It is a heterogeneous mixture in which the particles are visible to the naked eyes. Example: Chalk dissolved in water etc.
  • Colloids: It is a heterogeneous mixture in which particles are invisible to the naked eye but are visible through a powerful microscope. Example: Milk, blood etc.

Diameter of the particles is given in the table below:

Type of mixture

Diameter of the particles

True solution

<10-9m

Suspension

>10-6m

Colloid

10-6-10-9m
