Question

How does the presence of greenhouse gases result in global warming?

Open in App
Solution

Greenhouse gases:

  1. Gases such as carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, methane, and water vapor present in the atmosphere trap the heat coming from the sun
  2. They are termed natural greenhouse gases that act like a big blanket around the earth, keeping it warm for making life possible.
  3. Without these gases, the temperature on earth would have fallen to freezing values.
  4. The phenomenon of naturally warming up the Earth is called the ‘Greenhouse effect '.

Presence of Greenhouse gases results in global warming:

  1. The phenomenon of the gradual rise in the temperature of the earth is due to the high amount of emission of greenhouse gasses such as carbon dioxide, nitrogen, methane, and ozone.
  2. They warm the atmosphere by efficiently absorbing the infrared radiation emitted by the earth’s surface, the atmosphere, and the clouds.
  3. As a result of the warmth of the atmosphere, it also radiates infrared radiation in all directions, including downward to the Earth’s interior. The greenhouse gases trap this heat in the troposphere.
  4. The greenhouse gas, Carbon dioxide, is not considered a pollutant, but in higher concentrations, in the atmosphere, it forms a thick layer above the earth's surface which checks the radiation of the heat from the earth's surface due to which, the temperature of the earth's surface increases, thus it has become the reason for raising the temperature of the earth (Global warming).
