Question

How does the refractive index of a transparent medium affect the speed of light passing through it?

Open in App
Solution

  1. The refraction index, nof a transparent medium, is defined as the ratio of the speed of light in the vacuum to the speed of light in that medium.
  2. The formula is n=cv
  3. From the above formula, we can calculate the speed of light in that medium, it decreases as v=cn where, c=speed of light in a vacuum, n=refractive index of the medium
  4. More the refractive index of a transparent medium, less the speed of light passing through it.
