Question

How does the strength of the magnetic field produced by the current carrying solenoid vary with the number of turns in the coil ?

Open in App
Solution

Concept Used: Magnetic Field Strength

Step 1: Formula for the magnetic Field:

The formula for the magnetic field strength is,

H=iNl

Here, i is the current in the conductor, N is the number of turns in the coil and l is the length of the solenoid.

Step 2: Explanation:

  • Rewrite the expression for the magnetic field strength.

HαN

  • Number of turns in the coil is proportional to the strength of the magnetic field.
  • Hence, Greater the number of turns in the coil, stronger will be the magnetic field.
  • So, strength of the magnetic field varies with the number of turns in the coil proportionally.

If the number of turns increases then magnetic filed increase and if the number of turns decreases the magnetic field strength decreases.
