Total fertility rate:

  1. The total fertility rate is an important factor in determining the rate of population growth.
  2. It is defined as the average number of children a woman can bear in their reproductive age i.e. 12 to 55.
  3. When the average fertility rate is around 2, it is known as the replacement rate and population growth comes to a constant value.
  4. When the fertility rate reaches above a certain level known as the replacement level, the population will increase as a result of it.
  5. When the fertility rate decreases below a certain level known as the replacement level, the population will also decrease as a result of it.
