How does the water kept in an earthen pot become cool during summer ?
Concept used:
Evaporation is the process in which a liquid changes to vapour state at all temperatures.
During evaporation, some liquid particles leave the surface of the liquid by gaining kinetic energy and get converted into vapours. Thus, the average kinetic energy of the remaining particles in the liquid decreases, and the temperature falls. So, when a liquid evaporates, it makes the surface cool from where evaporation takes place.
Conclusion:
An earthen pot has a large number of small pores on its walls. Water continuously seeps through these pores to the outside surface of the pot which evaporates continuously by taking the heat of vaporisation from water. Thus, the water in the earthen pot gets cooled.
