Vegetative propagation
Vegetative propagation is a type of asexual reproduction that produces progeny by any vegetative propagule (rhizome, tubers, suckers etc.) without gamete formation and fertilization of male and female gametes.
For example, Tuber of potato, the rhizome of ginger. One major advantage of vegetative propagation is production of crops like bananas, sugarcane that do not produce viable seeds.
a. Potato
The vegetative propagation of sweet potato can be done by roots.
Sweet potato is a modification of adventitious roots which grow from the nodes of a running stem and they are irregularly swollen due to storage of food.
They can give rise to adventitious buds which when detached can give rise to new plants thus performing the function of vegetative propagation.
b. Mint
The vegetative propagation in mint (Mentha arvesis) occurs by the sucker.
Sucker is a non-green underground specialized stem developing from the underground base of an erect shoot or crown.
c- Sugar cane
Ratooning: It is a process by which the cane is cut close to the ground where the sugar content is concentrated.
After that the remaining stem begins to grow again and produces the second crop called ratoon.
