Question

How does water helps in transporting nutrients within the plant?

Open in App
Solution

Most plant nutrients are soluble in water.
Plant nutrients are Nitrogen , phosphorous, potassium, etc.All these nutrients are present as ions in soil , and hence are all water soluble.

So, in water, all these nutrients will dissolve. When plants take water from soil, along with water, the nutrients also pass from soil and reach plants. When this water is transported by plants from roots to other parts like leaves, the nutrients also move with water according to concentration difference.

Example, if leaves have less calcium , concentration of calcium will be low in leaves. So, calcium ions will diffuse from roots to leaves, through water.

So, water acts as a medium for diffusion of nutrients in plants. The ions can only diffuse, when solvent like water is present. Water is also called nutrient carrier, as it carries nutrients .
