Question

how does water move from roots to the leaves of tall trees?

Open in App
Solution

Dear student,
Water moves from roots to the leaves of tall trees by the following actions:
1. Root pressure
2.Adhesion(capillary action)
3.Cohesion
The trees contain xylem and phloem that act as a network for transportation of nutrients and water throughout the tree.
The root pressure and the capillary action push the water while the transpiration from the leaves pulls the water. Osmotic movement of the water from the soil to the root tissues genetraes root pressure. Adhesion of water molecules causes the generation of capillary action. However, transport of water only for a few metres is supported by adhesion and root pressure. Especially in tall trees, the rest of the water transport is attributed to the negative pressure generated by the leaves by transpiration pull. The negative pressure creates vaccum and water is pulled from the roots.
