Question

How does xylem sap move?

Open in App
Solution

Xylem:

  1. Xylem is the vascular tissue responsible for the transportation of water in plants.
  2. It transports food in sap vacuoles.
  3. Xylem is composed of tracheid, vessels, parenchyma, fibers, etc.
  4. The xylem sap is transported across the plant via the capillary action of water created by the transpiration pull (water loss via stomata) due to evaporation known as the ascent of sap.
  5. Capillary action is the result of the cohesive forces between the liquid molecules which is when the adhesion to the walls is stronger than cohesive forces.
