Solution
Polyspermy
Fusion of the egg with more than one sperm is called polyspermy.
Role of zona pellucida in preventing polyspermy
Zona pellucida is the thick transparent membrane surrounding a mammalian ovum.
The cortical granules present below the plasma membrane of the oocyte fuse with the plasma membrane and release their enzymatic content between the plasma membrane and the zona pellucida. This process releases enzymes from the vesicles that inactivate the sperm receptors and harden the zona pellucida. Hence polyspermy is prevented.
