Question

How electromagnetic waves are produced?

Open in App
Solution

Electromagnetic wave

  1. An electromagnetic wave is an example of a transverse wave.
  2. In an electromagnetic wave, the direction of propagation of the wave is perpendicular to the direction of vibrating particles.
  3. An example of an electromagnetic wave is visible light.

Formation of electromagnetic waves

  1. When an electric charge oscillates, it gives rise to another oscillating magnetic field.
  2. This is because a moving charge is known to produce a magnetic field and vice versa.
  3. Therefore, the oscillating magnetic field will also generate more electric fields.
  4. As this repeated generation of electric and magnetic field go on, the wave moves forward.
  5. In an atom when electrons move from a higher to a lower energy level they will radiate electromagnetic waves.

Hence, oscillating charged particles produce electromagnetic waves.
