Question

How electroplating with nickel can prevent iron from rusting?

Open in App
Solution

Part-1 Electroplating

Electroplating is a process by which metal ions migrate via a solution from a positive electrode to a negative electrode.

  • In this process, an electric current is passed through the solution that causes the coating of the object at the cathode by the metal in the solution,
  • Electroplating of IronFe is done to prevent its rusting,
  • For this purpose mainly Nickel is used.
  • Because Nickel provides superior ductility, corrosion resistance, and hardness to the iron.

Part-2 Nickel electroplating prevents iron from rusting

  • First, Nickel sulfate (NiSO4) electrolytic solution will be dissociated intoNi2+ ions and SO42- with waterH+ and OH-
  • Then the Ni2+ ion will be deposited on the cathode of iron as, Ni
  • It acts as a sacrificial barrier that slows and even prevents corrosion.
  • The Nickel coating on the iron will ward off corrosion in a specific environment.
  • It provides the best corrosion protection in an alkaline environment
