Mercaptan are sulphur containing compounds and generally all mercaptan posses a foul odour. Ethyl mercaptan is such a stinky gas whose minute concentrations can be easily detected by human nose. Therefore, to avoid accidents due to LPG leakage,manufacturers mix a little amount of ethyl mercaptan in the gas,so that when leakage occur,one can detect it.
