Question

How is a coalition government different from a one party government?

Open in App
Solution

Instructions: Differentiate between coalition government and one party government.

Solution:
A coalition government is formed when two or more parties come together to form the government. This arrangement is made because no single party achieves an absolute majority (more than 50% of seats) on their own strength.

On the other hand, a political party will form a majority government in a state if it wins the majority of seats (more than 50%) on its own strength. For example, in Andhra Pradesh, a party will form the majority if it wins the majority, ie., more than 50% of seats (ie, more than 50% of 175, i.e., 88 seats) on its own strength.
