Question

How is acetic acid prepared from
(a) ethanol (b) acetylene ?

Open in App
Solution

(a) It is prepared in the lab by the oxidation of ethanol with acidified potassium dichromate.

C2H5OH[O]−−−−K2Cr2O7CH3CHO+H2O[O]−−−−K2Cr2O7CH3COOH

(b) Acetylene is first converted to acetaldehyde by passing through 40% H2SO4 at 60oC in the presence of 1% HgSO4.
The acetaldehyde is then oxidised to acetic acid in the presence of catalyst manganous acetate at 70oC.

C2H2+H2OH2SO4(dil)−−−−−−CH3CHO

CH3CHO[O]−−−−−−−−−HgSO4/catalyst2CH3COOH
