Question

How is acetic acid prepared from ethanol and acetylene?

Open in App
Solution

With the use of acidic potassium dichromate (K2Cr2O7), acetic acid (CH3COOH) is prepared in the lab by the oxidation of ethanol (C2H5OH).

C2H5OH(aq)ethanolOxidationCH3CHOacetaldehydeOxidationCH3COOH(aq)aceticacid

Acetic acid is made by converting acetaldehyde (CH3CHO) to acetic acid (CH3COOH) by passing it through 40% sulfuric acid (H2SO4) in the presence of 1% Mercury(II) sulphate (HgSO4) at 60°C. The acetaldehyde is next oxidised to acetic acid at 70°C in the presence of a manganese acetate (C4H6MnO4) catalyst.

The chemical process for making acetic acid from acetylene is as follows:

C2H2(l)acetylene+H20(l)waterHgSO4dil.H2SO4CH3CHOacetaldehydeCH3CHOacetaldehyde+OcatalystCH3COOH(aq)aceticacid
