Question

How is atmospheric nitrogen converted to nitrates?

Open in App
Solution

The conversion of atmospheric nitrogen into nitrate takes place by biological fixation.

  • In biological fixation, plants that have root nodules are called leguminous plants, for example, peas, grams, beans etc.
  • The nodules of these plants contain nitrogen-fixing bacteria(Rhizobium).
  • These bacteria have the ability to absorb nitrogen directly from the air and convert them into nitrates.
  • These nitrates are consumed by plants and then conversion into proteins takes place.
