Question

How is ATP produced in the electron transport chain?

Open in App
Solution

Oxidative phosphorylation:

  1. The process from which electron ATP is formed inside a cell is known as oxidative phosphorylation.
  2. The process involves redox reactions to develop a proton gradient across the inner mitochondrial membrane and matrix.
  3. The electrons are carried by reduced molecules like FADH2, NADH2, etc.
  4. The electrons are passed across various electron complexes in the electron transport system to synthesize ATP.
  5. In one molecule of NADH2, three ATPs are formed and two ATPs are formed from one molecule of FADH2, hence converting NADH to ATP.
  6. This stage of the electron transport chain produces the most energy and occurs in mitochondria.
