$4 H C l + O_{2} C u C l_{2} - --- \to 2 C l_{2} + 2 H_{2} O$
Chlorine is prepared by oxidation of hydrogen chloride gas by atmospheric oxygen in the presence of $C u C l_{2}$ (Catalyst) at $723 K$ .
This method is called Deacon's process.
