Preparation of chloroform from ethyl alcohol:
Chlorine oxidises ethyl alcohol to acetaldehyde. Chlorine converts acetaldehyde to chloral. Calcium hydroxide converts chloral to chloroform.
CH3−CH2−OH Ethyl alcohol +Cl2→CH3−CHO Acetaldehyde +2HCl
CH3−CHO Acetaldehyde +3Cl2→CCl3−CHO Chloroal +3HCl
2CCl3−CHO Chloroal +Ca(OH)2→2CHCl3chloroform +(HCOO)2Ca Calcium formate
Chloroform stored in dark coloured bottles because it forms a poisionous compound phosgene, on exposure to air and sunlight.
