Question

How is cytokinesis different in plant cells as compared to an animal cell?

Open in App
Solution

Cytokinesis in plant cell:

  1. Cytokinesis occurs in plants through the formation of the cell plate,
  2. Cell plate formation starts at the center of the cell and grows outward, toward the lateral walls.

Cytokinesis in animal cell:

  1. Cytokinesis takes place through the formation of cell-furrow.
  2. The furrow deepens as the actin ring contracts, and eventually, the membrane is cleaved into two daughter nuclei.

In plant cells, cytokinesis occurs by cell plate formation.

It occurs during cleavage furrow formation in the plasma membrane.

Cell plate is formed in the middle of the parent cell at the equator by the accumulation of vesicles of dictyosomes and membranous elements of the endoplasmic reticulum, in order to separate two daughter cells. Cleavage furrow deepens towards equator which results in the formation of two new daughter cells.
The division happens centrifugally, that is, the cell plate moves from the centre to the periphery.. The division undergoes centripetally, which means the cleavage furrow grows from the periphery to the centre.
