Question

How is energy stored and released as potential and kinetic energy in anabolic and catabolic metabolism??

Open in App
Solution

In catabolic reactions, complex molecules are broken down into their simpler forms with release of energy. The potential energy stored in the chemical bonds of complex molecules is transformed into the kinetic energy for doing some mechanical work.

In anabolic reactions, simple molecules come together to form the complex molecules. The kinetic energy released during the catabolic reaction is often used to drive the anabolic reactions. In these reactions, the energy captured gets stored as potential energy in the chemical bonds.
