Hydrochloride gas( $HCl$ ) is highly soluble in water.
The preparation of Hydrochloric acid is done by dissolving $HCl$ gas in water using the funnel arrangement.
There is the possibility of damage to the apparatus if direct absorption of $HCl$ gas in water takes place using a delivery tube.
Because in such a process, the rate of its production does not match the rate of its dissolution.
To overcome such a problem of back suction of water, the funnel arrangement is used. This arrangement also provides a large surface area to dissolve HCl gas to form Hydrochloric acid.
