How is hydrogen prepared from water using the method of electrolysis?

Open in App
Solution

Part 1: Definition of electrolysis:

Electrolysis is the process of passing an electric current through the aqueous or molten form of a chemical species or a compound to bring about a chemical change.

Part 2: Preparation of hydrogen from electrolysis of water:

  1. Electrolysis of water is widely used in the industrial preparation of hydrogen
  2. The important components of an electrolytic setup are electrodes, electrolyte, electrolytic cell and battery.
  3. Here, water is decomposed into hydrogen and oxygen with the help of electricity.
  4. During the process, hydrogen is produced at the cathode, and oxygen is generated from the anode.
  5. The reaction is as follows:

2H2O(l)Waterelectricity2H2(g)Hydrogen+O2(g)Oxygen
