Question

How is hydrogen used in photosynthesis?

Open in App
Solution

Photosynthesis:

  1. Photosynthesis is a process by which plants convert light energy into chemical energy.
  2. The chemical energy is stored in the form of sugars, which are created from water and carbon dioxide.
  3. Energy is required to split water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen.
  4. This occurs in the step of the photosynthetic reaction where carbon dioxide combines with water.
  5. In the second stage of reactions, hydrogen is required where the plant releases oxygen as a byproduct.
  6. The hydrogen in the second stage combines with carbon dioxide for the formation of the sugar – glucose.
