Marasmus is a nutrition deficiency disease and it is caused by a severe deficiency of protein, vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, and fats.

Causes of Marasmus:

  1. Viral, bacterial, and parasitic infections can also lead to deficiency.
  2. Children, senior citizens, and people with a weak immune system are more susceptible to marasmus.
  3. Poverty.
  4. Starvation
  5. Famine or scarcity of food.
  6. Lack of education about balanced diet and nutritional requirements.
  7. Intake of medicines which may interfere with the absorption of required nutrients.
