Open in App
Solution

Ammonium hydroxide is used as a lab reagent especially in the qualitative analysis. The particular cation in the salt can be identified through the formation of the hydroxide precipitate colour.
Metallic salt + NH4OH ----> Metal hydroxide + ammonium salt
For ex.,FeSO4 + 2 NH4OH (NH4)2SO4 + Fe(OH)2The formation of dirty green hydroxide indicates the presence of ferrous. CuSO4 + 2 NH4OH (NH4)2SO4 + Cu(OH)2The formation of pale blue hydroxide indicates the presence of copper.
