Question

How is Nitrogen isolated from liquid air?

Open in App
Solution

Fractional distillation of liquid air:

  • Nitrogen and Oxygen gases are obtained from air.
  • Liquid air consists of 78% of Nitrogen and 21% Oxygen.
  • These two gases can be separated by fractional distillation of liquid air.
  • In fractional distillation at low temperature, the Nitrogen becomes liquid and can then be extracted.

Conclusion: Therefore using fractional distillation liquid air produces Nitrogen.
