How is nitrogen utilized by living organisms?

Nitrogen fixation:

  1. Nitrogen is an essential constituent of all living organisms.
  2. It is present in all amino acid, proteins, nucleic acid and vitamins.
  3. Nitrogen cannot be directly taken by plants and animals and therefore fixation of nitrogen is required.
  4. Bacteria like Rhizobium convert the atmospheric nitrogen into usable forms like ammonia, nitrates and nitrites.
  5. These are directly absorbed by the plant from the soil.
