Question

How is O3 estimated quantitatively?

Open in App
Solution

When O3 is treated with excess of KI solution buffered with borate buffer (pH=9.2)

I2 is liberated quantitatively, according to the following equation:

2I(aq)+H2O(l)+O3(g)2OH(aq)+I2(s)+O2(g)

The I2 thus liberated is titrated against a standard solution of sodium thiosulphate using starch as an indicator.

2Na2S2O3Sodium thiosulphate+I2Na2S4O6Sodium Tetrathionate+2NaI

Quantitative estimation of O3 is thus carried out.
