Question

How is oxygen and carbon dioxide transported in human beings?

Open in App
Solution

Transport of oxygen:

  1. Haemoglobin transports oxygen molecules to all the body cells for cellular respiration.
  2. Haemoglobin is the red pigment found in the RBCs of the blood.
  3. Oxygen obtained from the breathing combines with the haemoglobin and form oxyhaemoglobin and hence blood becomes oxygenated.
  4. This oxygenated blood transports to all body parts through circulatory system for the distribution of oxygen.

Transport of carbon dioxide:

  1. Haemoglobin takes up the carbon dioxide from the cell which is formed by the cellular respiration.
  2. Haemoglobin combines with carbon dioxide and forms carboxyhaemoglobin.
  3. This carbon dioxide rich blood reaches the alveoli of lungs and releases CO2 to the air sacs.
  4. this carbon dioxide releases out through expiration.
